Today Jazmina and I went to Varnja, where they have an annual festival, celebrating the amazing Lake Peipsi Onion, which has UNESCO and World Heritage protection.
Very small place, population 170, on the sibulatee, or "onion road"
Also a fishing village, so lots of smoked fish.
Across the lake is a big imaginary line, on the other side of the line is Russia.
It was fairly wet with intermittent showers, st one point we hung out in a still-warm sauna to warm up
Lake Peipsi. Russia on the horizon.
each house on the east side of the road has a little inlet dug into the lake edge, to allow boat access
dunny on the left
plastic sauna in the middle (made of timber framing and clear plastic sheet)
wood fired hot tub on the right.
I think this is also a sauna.
smoke house
Ex soviet army mobile kitchen, they were serving soup out of the front pot
I'm guessing an ice-tricycle for the winter???
sauna by the side of the road
Newly built log houses
smoke houses everywhere...
Jazmina turning blue, while eating the delicious Peipsi onion soup
Another happy onion salesman.
Local moonshine merchants, I had a snort of their 65% Samogonas, kept me toasty for a while.
They also sell mushrooms and gherkins as a front for their bootleg operation.
Jazmina enjoying some of the weird local berries.
Spiky things with a big pip in the middle,
smoker / bbq
keeping warm in the sauna
Jazmina keeping wam
